If it’s one thing that had to grow on me was the manner in which Europeans allocated their time on the Sabbath. Growing up in a strict-Adventist home, Sabbath was designated for church and church and more church. Granted, that’s a hiccup in the SDA teachings but…

[ a dish for another day ].

Thankfully, I was blessed to have people here who were willing to ‘argue’ with a hard-head like myself. Why was it that we thought volunteering our time for the less fortunate and going into the community was beneath us on Saturdays, but perfect for the rest of the week?

[ food for thought ]

On this specific Saturday, the youth had an outreach activity in town, helping out with La Carratera. I must say it was a fun experience, meeting immigrant Africans and hearing their stories, getting free food and getting to practice our Spanish. Would I participate in the run? Definitely not, but that’s my own food for thought.

We definitely got back this morning around 9, just in time for breakfast, after our hectic trek through Valencia to the train station then having to hike up the hill to our rooms. I was with Bliss and Areca, and we decided to skip on breakfast for need of sleep and made plans to attend lunch.

After lunch, there was homework to complete, because we were leaving for Andalucia tomorrow and I didn’t want it all to pile up. After toiling for a few hours, we stole away to the gym to play volleyball. That was where we saw the remnants of the TS as they were still recovering from the night before.

We had to leave the gym early because we had to pack for the upcoming trip, and we weren’t looking forward to waking up for the 8 am roll-call.

I found a dress for this day for the beautiful price of 7€! What a steal and I was definitely feeling myself. After church, and countless hugs, some albeit suspiciously close, we ended up by one of our teachers, Marvel, with hilarious company and awesome food. I am officially in love with gazpacho!

‎[ Gazpacho is a soup made of raw vegetables and served cold, usually with a tomato base, originating in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia.]

It was in his kitchen that Amipa told me that contrary to what she had been telling me all week, she wouldn’t be attending the activities of the upcoming night, my birthday activities. NOW! I knew this was coming because she had told Kip from since when we had gone to Valencia this past Wednesday that she didn’t want to go and thought I would feel slighted. Kip thought I should know because the activities needed solid numbers and counting someone on the fence would throw the numbers off if they ended up as a no-show. So I wasn’t shocked when she told me, however, I was a bit irritated that she waited until the DAY OF to say something. From that instance alone I vowed that I wouldn’t be inviting her to anything else, cause she could flop and not tell me until it was too late.

After lunch, we headed back to our rooms because I needed a nap to survive the night. I woke up in time for dinner and to get dressed to catch the train into Valencia. It was as I was running out the door of the dorm that the preceptora (means dean) called me into her office to basically lecture me that I was with students younger than me and that she was counting on me to be a good influence. Thank you Sunshine, for already trying to put a damper on my night of fun.

Walking down to the road to meet up with the others, I had assumed that the only people going were the ones who were with me in that moment, until I rounded the corner and saw a substantial amount of people. H O W?

The more hilarious fact was that they had no idea where they were going, they were just going to celebrate a birthday and have fun. So on the walk to the train station, approx. 20 minutes, everyone got to know each other a bit. Once we reached the train station, we had a couple minutes to kill so we decided to indulge in some lemon wedges with Titan, cause he had never done so before.

The train ride was a comical one. More jokes and surface information about the attendees. When we finally reached Valencia, we realized that we had a good 30 minute walk to make but over an hour to kill. So we stopped off for fries and birthday niceties, mixed with us running a bit rampant. One guy, Stallion, thought he was so strong that he could stop an on-coming car, but we pulled his crazy face out of the road before his brother could have a mild heart attack, which he followed up with smooching a few of the ladies with us.

We finally met up with Naveen, and some other members of the TS were with him!! I knew then that it would be a memorable night and I didn’t regret going or the company. We ended up seeing a dancing smurf, and got extra large glasses as tokens of the night.

Happy Birthday to me!!

The day before my 23rd!

IMG_0732I’m actually excited about the plans I made for this weekend!! Plus, today is a holiday so Amipa, Manerva, Kip, Sesame and myself headed to the beach for some pre-birthday celebrations! I’ve never been to the beach on or around my birthday so this was a treat for me! We spent a couple hours in the sun, braved some treacherous rocks, and had time to grab a bite to eat. We spent some more time out on the beach, then got changed to head out for our evening plans.

My pre-23 celebrations continued as we took the bus to Valencia for dinner.

We walked around for a bit trying to decide on a place until we located a bar that had the BEST pizza I had eaten TO DATE! Sooooooooo good. Not to mention we got free drink upgrades cause it was my ‘birthday’.

THEN. As we were deciding to mosey off the pizza, Sesame told us that he forgot to sign out.

H O W!?

So we had to hurry back to campus so he could get into the dorm before they locked him out. My sides were screaming and we were buzzless. *side eye*

Happy Monday!!

I took out my braids today!!!! And boy did the people stare. AHAHAHAAAAA!

I also had my first monitor meeting, and he is a TS member. PJ is quite handsome but he’s also quite cocky. I think that may be a Spanish trait. *ponders*

He’s also 1-year older than me, which isn’t much. So this will prove to be interesting in the months to come. He does talk ridiculously fast so I’m going to have to get on the ball ASAP.

September 29, 2013

At the ripe hour of 6:30 AM, Amipa and I draggggeeedddd our corpses out of bed and embraced the dark as we set off for our first sunrise hike. I am thoroughly out of shape because the rest of the group left me behind, but eventually we made it to the top before the sun came up.

It was a TASK, but at the first crack of light I couldn’t help but being thankful that I was able to see another day and attempt this feat. By the time we made it back down it was after 9 and the sleep that beckoned to us completely overtook us. it was GLORIOUS. I wouldn’t mind doing this at least once a month.
